A Letter from our JSAZ Governor

Fellow Statesmen:

You have made this a banner year for the Arizona Territory of Junior State and we want to thank you.  This year we have more than doubled our membership numbers and we are well on our way to statehood. JSAZ will be part of the Council of Governors beginning this summer. This year would not have been as exciting and successful without the productivity and hard work of each Chapter President, every JSAZ member, and advisor. From a motivating Leadership Conference in September and well organized mini-cons throughout the year, more JSAZ students were encouraged to become active citizens. At our first student-run Fall State conference we discussed and debated foreign policy, as well as domestic and state issues. JSAZ continued to excel as we traveled to Long Beach where everyone participated by presenting new legislation to do a reenactment of what the U.S. Congress does. JSAZ came together again in March at Spring State, where the debates and thought talks revolved around the “American Dream” theme. Throughout the year, JSAZ had one of the best speakers programs by having great speakers such as Arizona State Treasurer Dean Martin, Maricopa County Sheriff Joe Arpaio, Congressional candidate Jonathan Paton, and Senate candidate Rodney Glassman.

We'd love to congratulate our graduating seniors and thank everyone who participated to make this year amazing! Thank you for making politics a noble practice, voicing your views, and adding your own touch to JSAZ by attending conventions, mini-cons, cabinet meetings, and conferences. We know that JSAZ is more than attending state conventions, so we also thank our chapters and thank each and every chapter member. Our chapters-- working to promote democracy and political involvement in their schools and communities-- are the heart of JSAZ.

We would like to remind everyone that there are still opportunities to participate in JSA this year. We encourage you to attend the Arizona Institute on Leadership and Politics, June 6-9. During four days at Arizona State University and the State Capitol, you'll explore politics in Arizona, question state leaders, and learn about issues facing the state, including illegal immigration, the state's budget crisis, education cutbacks, and more. Don't forget JSA’s summer schools at Stanford, Princeton, and Georgetown. We encourage you to spend your summer with JSA! You can get more information and start your application online at www.jsa.org.

Become a better leader; make a difference for tomorrow by promoting democracy, good citizenship, political activism, and empowering youth to become active citizens in society.

Once again, thanks for your hard work and dedication,

Carolina Ramirez                                                         Theo Jones
